Memory and storage guidance

What these limits mean

RAM is the short-term working memory used while the player app is running, decoding video, and drawing the screen. More RAM can help with higher-resolution media, multiple layers, and larger playlists, but it does not determine how much content can be stored offline.

Storage is the device space used for the operating system, apps, and cached media. TapSignage can stream content while connected, but offline playback requires enough free local storage to cache the files. A device may play a large video from the internet yet be unable to cache that same video for offline use.

Video size depends on resolution, bitrate, codec, duration, and the number of files in the playlist. A 4K or high-bitrate video uses substantially more storage and processing capacity than a compressed 1080p file. When free space is low, caching may be incomplete, older content may be removed, or a playlist may not continue offline as expected.

Figures below are advertised device specifications, not guaranteed free space. The operating system and installed apps use part of the storage, so usable cache space will be lower.

  • Google TV Streamer (4K): 4 GB RAM and 32 GB storage.
  • onn. 4K Pro: 3 GB RAM and 32 GB storage.
  • onn. 4K Plus: 2 GB RAM and 16 GB storage.
  • onn. 4K / FHD devices: commonly listed around 2 GB / 8 GB or 1.5 GB / 8 GB; verify the exact model because onn. specifications change by product generation.
  • Chromecast with Google TV (4K): 2 GB RAM and 8 GB storage.
  • Chromecast with Google TV (HD): 1.5 GB RAM and 8 GB storage.
  • Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2nd Gen, 2023): 2 GB RAM and 16 GB storage.
  • Fire TV Stick 4K (2nd Gen, 2023): 2 GB RAM and 8 GB storage.
  • Fire TV Stick HD / older Fire TV Stick models: specifications vary by generation; verify the exact model before deploying large video files.
  • Roku devices: Roku exposes app memory limits and available memory to developers, but does not provide one comparable user-accessible storage figure across models. Treat available cache capacity as model-dependent.
  • Samsung Tizen and LG webOS: RAM, storage, codec support, and TapSignage compatibility vary by display model. Marked TBD until the exact commercial display is confirmed.

For large videos, choose a device with more free storage, use efficient video formats, and test the complete playlist on the exact hardware. Cached playback depends on the player, codec, network, and available local space.
